Trick or Treat

I am going to be honest. I love Halloween, but was not looking forward to it this year. Leading up to the day I was a little homesick for Williamsburg. Kingsmill has the most fabulous trick or treating and Halloween Party that I was sad to be missing out on the fun. So let's just say that my expectations for halloween were low. And guess what? Trick or Treating exceeded my expectations! Our German friends had told us that Germans do participate in Trick or Treat, but I was skeptical. I had no idea what their idea of Trick or Treating was, so I decided to play it safe. We went on post to massive chaos of Americans and Germans trick or treating near apartment stairwells. Not exactly fabulous, but Addy was happy because her bag was filled in a matter of 3o minutes. It was only 5:30. I decided that it was mission accomplished and we could actually head home at a decent hour and eat some dinner. I had arranged to meet our German friends at 6:30 to participate in their version of Trick or Treating. Jeff could stay with home with Luke and Addy and I could wander the neighborhood with friends. Turned out we wandered until 8pm and Addy's bag of goodies now weighs about 10 lbs. SUCCESS!! I was pleasantly surprised at how much of our neighborhood participates in this holiday. All in all, it was exhausting, I did miss my friends, but we had a very happy 4 year old on a sugar high.

A little side note. Ideas of costumes to Germans mean scary things. There are no cute ladybugs, bumblebees, butterflies, or disney characters. Example in this photo of Addy with her friends (both girls):
